Adopt A Native Elder Rug Show Performance

Submitted by analysa.allison on

This past Saturday, November 11, 2017, our Nebo Title VI Performing Arts group was invited to perform at the 28th Annual Adopt A Native Elder Rug Show. Our performing Arts group did such a wonderful job performing in front of many Navajo Elders. The Elders really enjoyed the performance, and several Elders were grinning ear to ear as they saw our students shine as they performed. It was such a neat experience to be a part of.

There was also a demonstration of traditional Navajo tasks such as weaving, grinding corn, making yarn out of wool, and tieing of a Navajo bun (tsiiyeel).  Our students performed each part beautifully. The Elders really loved this part of the performance, and it gave each person in the audience a tiny glimpse into a traditional Navajo day.

There were many beautifully handcrafted items for sale. All the proceeds go right back to the Navajo Elders who made them, typically grandma's and grandpa’s living on the Navajo Reservation. The proceeds earned usually help these Elders purchase food, clothing, medicine, and wood that help them survive the cold winter months. Some items for sale were: rugs, jewelry, traditional skirts, Pendleton teddy bears, Navajo dolls, and blankets. That is just to name a few.

Nebo Title VI Indian Education program was delighted to be invited to such a wonderful event. It was an honor for our American Indian students to perform in front of the Navajo Elders. Title VI is so grateful for the opportunity. Thank you Adopt a Native Elder for allowing us to share this special event with your organization.
